Flash Lamp Annealing Enables Thin-Film Solid-State Batteries on Aluminum Foil

Crystallization of cathode films in solid-state microbatteries requires thermal annealing at high temperatures, restricting the choice substrate and current collector materials. Here, flash lamp (FLA) is explored to crystallize LiCoO2 (LCO) cathodes on aluminum foils. Millisecond pulses visible light induce rapid heating LCO up 900 °C, whereas never exceeds melting point. Microbatteries consisting an FLA-processed cathode, a LiPON electrolyte, Li metal anode are fabricated flexible foil, with performance comparable those rigid silicon. This method can enable new microbattery designs lower production costs.
